A plain-English account of what this site stores on your device, and what third-party content on a few pages may store on theirs.
The short version: this site doesn't use analytics or advertising cookies, and doesn't track you. The only thing it stores itself is a small note in your browser's local storage remembering that you've dismissed the cookie notice at the bottom of the page. A handful of pages embed content from other organisations — a booking calendar, an application form, a donation widget, and Canal & River Trust notices — and those may set their own cookies, governed by their own policies, not ours.
Tees River Rescue's own pages don't set any tracking, analytics or advertising cookies. The only thing stored in your browser by this site is:
That's it. There's no site-wide login, no shopping basket, and no first-party analytics running anywhere on teesriverrescue.org.
The River Tees Live page pulls in live weather, tide, river flow, flood and sewage overflow data. Most of these readings are requested directly by your browser from the organisation that publishes them, which means that organisation receives your IP address when the page loads — the same as it would if you visited their site directly. As far as we can tell these are simple data lookups rather than tracking requests, but we don't control what those services do on their end. They currently include:
The tide curve and the Canal & River Trust notices panel are the two exceptions — both are fetched periodically by our own server (from Storm Glass, and from a community CRT notices mirror at canalmaps.co.uk, respectively) and saved to this site, so your browser never contacts either of those directly.
A few pages embed a widget or page from another organisation directly inside the page (technically, in an iframe). Because that content is running its own code inside your browser, it can set its own cookies independently of anything on this list — we don't have visibility or control over that. They are:
If you'd rather not have any of these set cookies, the simplest option is to use the "open in a new window/tab" link provided alongside each one instead of interacting with the embedded version — though note that visiting their site directly is still subject to their own cookie policy, just not embedded inside ours.
This site loads its typefaces from Google Fonts, and the map on the sewage overflow watch uses map tiles from CARTO (built on OpenStreetMap data), via the Leaflet mapping library loaded from the unpkg CDN. These are requests for static files (fonts, map images, code), not cookies, but as with the live data above, the request does mean those services see your IP address.
You can clear or block cookies at any time through your browser's settings, and clear local storage the same way. Blocking cookies entirely may stop some of the embedded content above (particularly the donation widget and application form) from working properly.
